What’s being called the “MTV for Christians” has become the fastest-growing cable channel in America. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Gospel Music Channel has reached 46.7 million subscribers since its first broadcast in October 2004. A media research group showed the GMC has a larger viewership than TeenNick and NBA TV. From 2007 to 2008, GMC’s advertising revenue went from $6.5 million to $13.5 million. Charley Humbard and a group of investors who own the channel, spent two years assembling the programming after Humbard left the Discovery Channel. GMC offers music videos in every style from high church to hip-hop, talk shows and insider reports. But their format consists mostly of gospel and Christian music.
