Academy Award-winning thespian comedienne Whoopi Goldberg will unite with the West End production in London of Sister Act: the Musical this August.

Fans of the film, however, are in for a shock. Goldberg, who originated the role of Deloris Van Cartier in the film—a Las Vegas showgirl forced into a convent via witness protection will dress up in another habit—will dress up in another habit, not as Sister Mary Clarence but as Mother Superior.

Goldberg succeeds Sheila Hancock in the role of Mother Superior, originated by Maggie Smith in the film version. She will play the three week limited run Aug. 10 through Aug. 31.

In addition to her new role, Goldberg is a producer of the stage production that features a score by Academy Award victor Alen Menken and Tony nominated lyricist Glenn Slater.

This marks two years since Goldberg’s last stage appearance where she substituted for Jacki Hoffman in a limited run on the Broadway roller disco surprise smash Xanadu In 2008.

Stage Entertainment UK CEO Bill Taylor noted that: “The Sister Act journey has been an incredible one so far, and Whoopi’s input from the development stage onwards has been invaluable. Now, back in her habit and on stage with our company at the beautiful Palladium, theatregoers get to see a comedy legend at work. To say the Sister Act family is excited might be something of an understatement!”

Undoubtedly, Goldberg is one of the world’s most celebrated stars, being of the elite cluster of luminaries who have won the Grammy, the Golden Globe, the Emmy—and as the producer of the original Broadway snap Thoroughly Modern Millie—a 2002 Tony Award winner.

“This is also a chance to say a goodbye to the indomitable, multi-talented and unspeakably wonderful Sheila Hancock, who has been a mother figure both on and off stage. I can never thank her enough for her part in making the show the success it is today,” Taylor said.
