JACKSON, Miss. — Gov. Haley Barbour is being criticized for recent comments he made about the civil rights era.
In an interview with conservative magazine The Weekly Standard, the governor is quoted as saying, “I just don’t remember it as being that bad.”
Barbour was being profiled as a potential 2012 GOP presidential candidate.
Barbour was talking about growing up in Yazoo City during the 1960s. He went on to say, “I remember Martin Luther King came to town, in ’62. He spoke out at the old fairgrounds and it was full of people, black and white.”
Barbour’s critics are calling the comments disturbing and say he is not ready for prime time.
