Washington — Robert Gibbs, White House press secretary, announced Wednesday that he will step down from his position in February.  Although he will no longer be a part of the administration, Gibbs will serve as an outside political adviser to President Obama.

Gibbs will refocus his attention on President Obama’s re-election campaign.  President Obama told The New York Times that Gibbs “will continue to shape the dialogue politically for many years to come.”

“It’s important to take a step back and recharge, ahead of 2012, when we transition to the task of re-electing the president,” said Gibbs.

His efforts as a political advisor will focus on supporting the administration’s positions by gaining support through different internet platforms and media outlets.
