NEW YORK — Tracy Lawrence, an inmate at Rikers island beamed in her cap and gown, after graduating from the facility’s parenting course, alongside her three kids and 11 other female prisoners.
Lawrence, 30, was sentenced to eight months in prison for gun possession.
“When the incident happened, I wasn’t thinking about my kids,” Lawrence said.
“But I now know I’m not the only one suffering. My kids are doing the time with me also.”
The course taught by FamilyWorks, funded by the Corrections Department, the city council and the federal government, provides biweekly lessons about parental discipline, communication skills and how to be positive role models in their children’s lives.
The NY Daily News Reports:
For some, the voluntary course is an important step toward regaining custody of their children upon release from jail. For others, it’s a chance to understand the impact their incarceration has had on their children.
