While it is commonly believed that crime will rise during periods of economic downturn that has not been the case in the U.S., where violent crime has decreased in the last four years.

Still, many cities face rampant violence, Detroit being one of them.

In 2010, the “Motor City” led the nation with 345 murders making it the most violent crime-prone city in the nation.

Forbes highlights Detroit and several other cities that top the list of America’s most dangerous cities.

“There’s a complex series of forces at work behind these rates,” says Tom Blomberg, dean of the College of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Florida State Univeristy. “The state of the economy, demographics, the number of young males at any given time, the rate of imprisonment and the number of police all factor in.”
