NEW YORK-An off duty police officer shot and wounded a suspect at the 125th St. and St. Nicholas Ave. in Harlem.

Several police cars surround the area after the shooting. The officer was not hurt and it is not clear what caused the shooting. The victim was rushed to Harlem Hospital in serious condition.

The New York Daily News reports:

When he approached, the mother told him that her daughter had just been groped from behind.

“As he approaches [the suspect] the officer identifies himself as a police officer,” said Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne, the NYPD’s top spokesman. “A struggle ensues and one round is discharged from the officer’s gun, striking the suspect in the [buttocks.]“
