Johns Hopkins University is allowed to create its own armed police force. It’s all thanks to a measure that received final approval by the Maryland General Assembly Monday.

The Senate voted 42-2 to pass the bill, sending the measure to Gov. Larry Hogan who will likely sign it.

The bill sparked debate between those who want to increase campus safety as Baltimore struggles with violent crime and those who fear police profiling.

If the legislation comes law, the school will be able to create a force of 100 police officers at its academic and hospital campuses.
