You might want to think twice about keeping the water running while brushing your teeth in the morning. The Board of Estimates just approved a rate hike in water and sewer which averages $81 over a year for a family of four.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and Public Works blame the hike on aging infrastructure that has been the cause of major water main breaks in and around the city. “The magnitude of the problem is immense, but we’re just starting to understand just how much we have to do,” says Keisha Powell of Public Works.

This announcement has enraged city residents who are already struggling to manage their utility expenses. There have been over 5,000 water main breaks in the last 5 years.
