Tuesday might just be the day that the disastrous Gulf oil leak is finally and completely stopped.

Crews hope to begin forcing mud and maybe cement down the throat of the blown out oil-well, which has dumped 4.9 million barrels into the Gulf of Mexico, sparking the largest accidental oil spill of all time.

The plan, dubbed “static kill,” will replace an experimental cap — the only thing keeping oil from spewing back into the ocean for the past two weeks.

Engineers will conduct tests to determine if the broken blowout preventer can handle the static kill. If the tests go well, they plan to spend Tuesday through Thursday pumping mud into the well.
