The Washington Washington Football Team announced today that they have released running back Clinton Portis.
In his seven seasons (2004-10) with the Washington Football Team, Portis played in 84 games with 83 starts. He ranks second in franchise history in rushing yards (6,824), rushing attempts (1,667) and rushing touchdowns (46).
“Clinton provided excitement from the very first time he touched the ball as a Redskin and we were lucky to witness every ounce of energy, effort and passion he has given ever since,” Washington Football Team Owner Daniel M. Snyder said. “We have been through a lot both on and off of the field and we would like to wish him and his family the very best. He will always be a Redskin and go down as one of the franchise’s all-time greats.”
Portis started all five games he played in 2010, finishing with 227 rushing yards on 54 carries (4.2 avg.) and two rushing touchdowns.
“I would like to thank the organization,” Portis said. “Dan [Snyder] and Mike [Shanahan] were honest, straight-up people with me. I always appreciated the opportunity from Dan to play here. Being a Redskin was a special part of my life. Coming and being in that organization, I turned from a kid having fun to a man carrying responsibilities. I tried to put the world on my shoulders for Coach Gibbs and the Washington Football Team fans.”
Portis ranks 26th in NFL history and fourth among active players with 9,923 career rushing yards in nine NFL seasons. He was originally drafted by the Denver Broncos in the second round (51st overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft.
“I’ve known Clinton Portis since he entered the National Football League and will always respect the competitive drive, intensity and passion that he brought to the organization every day,” Washington Football Team Executive Vice President/Head Coach Mike Shanahan said.
Portis has been selected to two Pro Bowls, following the 2003 season as a member of the Broncos and following the 2008 season as a member of the Washington Football Team.
