The Root’s Michael Arceneaux weighs in with a opinion piece on the Rapper T.I., who recently became the subject of backlash after an interview with Vibe magazine where the he accused gay people of being too sensitive to anti-gay sentiment.

In the interview T.I. remarked “gays are “like, ‘If you have an opinion against us, we’re gonna shut you down’ … That’s not American. If you’re gay you should have the right to be gay in peace, and if you’re against it you should have the right to be against it in peace.”

Arceneaux responds to the rapper’s statements writing:

Not only does this statement suggest that the recently paroled rapper has a shaky grasp of U.S. civics, but he confused the concept of entertainers having the creative freedom to push the envelope with some bizarre request for public figures to be allowed to be hateful without repercussions.
