Protests Mark First Anniversary Of Freddie Gray's Death

State Sen. Catherine Pugh came out on top last night (April 26) in the race for Baltimore mayor in the Democratic primary, trumping former mayor Sheila Dixon and knocking out 10 other candidates along the way.

Dixon, who was forced from office in 2010 after being accused of perjury, only trailed Pugh at 25 percent, whereas polls suggest the other candidates had less than 10 percent of the city’s support.

As the city preps for new administration during the anniversary of Freddie Gray‘s death and the riots that followed, it’s important to note Pugh’s efforts in trying to help ease the tension between protesters and police when they faced off this time year.

Pugh will face Rep. Alan Walden in the general election in November but is projected to win Mayor as Democrats outnumbering Republicans 10 to one in Baltimore.

Before being appointed to the Maryland House of Delegates for three terms, she also served on the Baltimore City Council for five years.
