The news of Alton Sterling’s death at the hands of police officers continues to rock the country with sadness, anger, frustration and outrage. However, actress Issa Rae proves that some good can come out of horrible situations, as the actress has raised an enormous amount of money for Sterling’s family in just a short time.
TheGrio has the details about Issa Rae starting a GoFundMe page for Alton Sterling’s family and the overwhelming financial response the fundraising request received in a mere 24 hours.
The report states:
After the shooting by the police of Alton Sterling, many responded with outrage and sympathy for the Sterling family. Watching Sterling’s 15-year-old son break down on television, asking for his father was too much to bear for many viewers. Actress and writer Issa Rae of the web series ‘The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl’, decided to take action soon after the unsettling news.
Rae started a GoFundMe called the “Alton Sterling Family Scholarship Fund” and ensured the public that all proceeds would go towards Alton Sterling’s five children. The effort has been extremely successful. Rae soon exceeded her original goal of $40,000 and raised it to $200,000. In one day, the GoFundMe raised over $400K from benefactors across the country.
Note: At press time the GoFundMe account has surpassed $500K mark, which is not quoted in TheGrio’s article.
This is absolutely wonderful and heart-warming news that will hopefully offer the Sterling family even the slightest bit of comfort during this devastating ordeal. If you would like to donate to the Alton Sterling Family Scholarship Fund, you can do so here.
