Perched on a hill in Northeast Baltimore, the iconic collegiate Gothic-style building of Baltimore City College, complete with its 150-foot stone tower, has stood for nearly 100 years. Now, the landmark high school is preparing for a significant modernization.

A new renovation plan proposes wrapping part of the building’s rear corner in a sleek, contemporary design. The public will have a final opportunity to review the project during a meeting on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., both in-person at the school and virtually.

Preliminary images of the redesign are available on the school’s website. Renderings from Samaha Associates, an architecture firm based in Fairfax, Virginia, show that two tennis courts will be replaced by a black-and-tan addition. This structure will link the main school building to the student parking lot and feature a staircase leading to a grassy seating area and a glass pavilion. Click here to check them out.

Construction is expected to begin this summer and will take about three years to complete. During that time, City College students will temporarily relocate to the University of Baltimore campus.

The City College project is part of a broader effort to upgrade four Baltimore City high schools over the coming years. Renovations are already underway at Frederick Douglass High School, where construction crews recently uncovered mysterious contents inside an old school safe.
