“I killed her.”
Cook County prosecutor Christina Hake relied on eyewitnesses to give a shocking account of the moment an unnamed 13-year-old girl tragically stabbed honor student De’Kayla Dansberry, 15, on Saturday evening, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.
According to Hake, the stabbing took place around 7:30 p.m. and was filmed on a cell phone camera in front of Chicago’s Park Gardens complex.
The 13-year-old in question pleaded not guilty on Tuesday. Cook County judge Cynthia Ramirez ordered the suspect to remain in custody during proceedings and denied a request for electronic monitoring.
Eyewitnesses told police the girl left her apartment on Saturday “like she was ready to fight” and returned “panicking,” according to The Sun-Times.
Hake obtained the knife from her mother, Tamika Gayden, 35. Gayden was booked and charged with murder and felony contributing to the delinquency of a minor, the Sun-Times reports. Police told the publication that Gayden and her daughter turned themselves in, accompanied by an attorney.
De’Kayla’s mother, Sheila Dansberry, and father, Julian Glanton, were at the hearing on Tuesday.
“I miss my daughter. I just want justice for whoever did this to my daughter,” Glanton said. “There’s too much crazy madness going on in the world. I’m just lost for words. I don’t know what to say.”
Dansberry was a student at Johnson College Prep. She ran track and was scheduled to compete at a state meet in Illinois on Friday.
